Four reports have been written about the Nov. 18 pepper-spraying of unarmed Occupy UC Davis protesters or the UC system’s policing of protests.

Now, the hard work begins.

“It’s time to move forward,” state Sen. Lois Wolk, D-Davis, said Tuesday during a three-hour joint legislative hearing on police use of force at UC and California State University campuses.

“What my concern, right now, is that there needs to be a shared understanding on the campus …”

Bank protesters plead not guilty

UC Davis English professor Joshua Clover, one of the 12 protesters facing criminal charges for their roles in the blockade of the U.S. Bank branch at UCD, addresses Commissioner Janene Beronio in Yolo Superior Court in late April. Sue Cockrell/Enterprise file photo

The so-called “Banker’s Dozen” crowded into Yolo County Superior Court on Thursday with five attorneys in tow — well-known San Francisco defense attorney J. Tony Serra among them — then pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges stemming from their blockade of a bank branch.

The 11 UC Davis students and one professor will next appear before Judge David Reed for a pre-trial conference on June 1, with the case likely to receive a July trial date.

The protesters face 20 counts each of obstructing movement on a street or in a public place and one count each of conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor.

As Katehi talks of ‘lessons learned,’ some faculty call censure wrong

UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi said Wednesday that relying on bad information and a flawed decision-making process caused her to be to quick to send in police to remove an Occupy Davis encampment. The bungled police operation of Nov. 18 followed, with a dozen protesters pepper-sprayed and 10 more arrested. The chancellor gave some of her … Continue Reading

Greenwald definitely listens

On Tuesday, many if not all of us were politically pepper-sprayed by a “Don’t Reward Bad Behavior” ad targeting Sue Greenwald. The Occupy students at UCD were pepper-sprayed because of their dissent from, as they put it, an “out-of-control administration” that has used privatization in the face of budgetary restrictions to turn education into a … Continue Reading

UC report calls for more tolerance of protests

By Nanette Asimov BERKELEY — University of California officials dealing with student protests should “shift away from a mind set” focused on rules and regulations, and instead “recognize explicitly the historic role of civil disobedience” as a legitimate tactic, a new university report says. The analysis, presented Friday, was ordered up in November by UC President Mark Yudof after … Continue Reading

Faculty leaders censure Katehi

UC Davis police officers begin taking down an Occupy UC Davis encampment on the campus Quad on Friday, Nov. 18. The situation quickly grew more tense and resulted in the pepper-spraying of seated demonstrators, captured on video that went viral. Wayne Tilcock/Enterprise file photo

The UC Davis Academic Senate Executive Council has censured Chancellor Linda Katehi and a special committee narrowly voted to call for her resignation based on her handling of the Nov. 18 pepper-spraying of student protesters.

Members of the special committee also urged a call for the resignation of Vice Chancellors John Meyer and Fred Wood, as well as former Police Chief Annette Spicuzza, who recently announced her retirement.

The Executive Council stopped short of calling for resignations “at this time.”

Instead, it censured Katehi for “failure to perform adequately the tasks of her office and failure to provide clarity, candor and trustworthy accounts in relation to the events of Nov. 18.”
