Physical Edge, a rehabilitation and fitness center owned and operated by four partners, Bud and Darby Cassell and Mathew and Marianne Moore, first opened its doors in June 2003.
The couples came together with a vision about the kind of clinic and care they wanted to provide in the Davis area. Their goal was to improve the quality of life for the patients and fitness members they serve. This has been done by providing the highest standard of clinical care.
The companies nine therapists specialize in rehabilitation in orthopedics, neurological disorders, spine care, pediatrics, occupational, hand, aquatic and Pilates therapy.
The owners feel so fortunate to have such a talented and diverse team of professionals at Physical Edge.
“What we have is rare when it comes to therapy clinics,” shares Bud Cassell. “It is an extended family.”
There is simply an openness in the clinic — one where sharing and support is always welcome. The past four years have been especially pivotal.
“We are very proud of the work climate which has evolved,” said Mat Moore. “Our staff has embraced a philosophy of care that has absolutely changed the way they treat their patients and clients. This philosophy is the Functional Movement System, a program all of our therapists are either a certified instructor for (and training other therapists around the U.S.) or certified in.
It began about four years ago when co-owner and physical therapist Mat Moore and physical therapist Brian Padilla attended a continuing education course by the founder of the FMS System, Grey Cook. They came back jazzed about what they had just learned and held an inservice with the rest of the rehab team to share. Mat Moore recalls that “it forever changed the way I set about treating patients … I had to take a step back, evaluate my methods and figure how to incorporate this way of thinking.”
“Soon, many of our staff enrolled in the courses and shortly thereafter, we were all hooked and the culture of our clinic was forever changed.”
The FMS belief is that establishing proper movement patterns is the cornerstone of rehabilitating from injury, improving athletic performance, preventing future injury and forming a solid foundation for a fitness program. This training philosophy is used in many professional rehabilitation clinics as well as utilized by professional sports teams in the NFL, including the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers, as well as the NHL, NBA, soccer, the Titleist Performance Institute, many Division I NCAA sports programs and many others. In fact, this is the philosophy that has been used over the years by our therapists at Physical Edge when working with the City of Davis firefighters to reduce injuries and significantly decrease workers compensation rates.
Physical Edge therapists do an initial assessment with individuals to identify dysfunctional movement patterns that are either contributing to chronic injuries/ailments, or that are holding a person back from optimizing their fitness and competitive potential. Then, the therapists work with their patients and clients individually or in a group class setting to help restore the balanced movements their bodies were meant to have in order to heal from injury, compete or train efficiently.
The clinic is now fully walking the FMS walk and talking the talk.
“We have held inservices to include our personal trainers so that we are truly ‘one team’ working together to do the best we can to serve our patients and clients,” says Bud Cassell.
“Each week, we offer four Functional Movement Classes instructed by our therapists to help individuals optimize their fitness programs, increase performance, better manage chronic injuries/ailments, prevent injury and promote durability,” shares Brian Cassell.
“We couldn’t be more pleased with the path our FAMILY business is moving down … very exciting, very relevant and very fulfilling,” share all four partners.
