The original Stabler’s A-1 Appliance has been in the area since the 1960s, when Walt and Joanne Stabler, Paul’s parents, opened the store in a warehouse on County Road 100A. The store is now at 1226 E. Harter Ave., off East Street.
“We’re a little off the beaten path, but our customers don’t seem to mind, since we focus on excellent customer service,” Paul says.
“In fact, our business has doubled since we moved to this location; it’s certainly easier for people to get to, rather than dealing with all the Main Street traffic,” Paul says.
Paul credits a good foundation for the store’s current success.
“I started helping my parents in the store when I was about 13 or 14 years old. They really got things established, and when Carman and I took over in 2005 it was pretty well-known for quality appliances and service,” he says.
Stabler’s A-1 Appliance sells and services all major brands of appliances, including dishwashers, refrigerators, microwaves, ranges, freezers, washing machines and dryers by manufacturers such as GE, Maytag, Hotpoint, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Maytag, Kitchen Aid and Bosch. In addition, they sell accessories such as range hoods and wine refrigerators.
The family involvement in the business extends to Carman and Paul’s two sons, Christopher, 28, and Michael, 22, who work in the store, helping with deliveries, installations, parts and customer service.
Sister-in-law Gloria Stabler and Carman’s brother, Jeff, also work at A-1 Appliance , and Paul’s brother, Tom, and his wife, Pam, own and operate a store in Placerville.
“It’s a real family business and we’re happy to continue to provide excellent prices and service to all of our customers,” Carman says.
The store services everything sold there, Carman notes, “and when you call, we’re there. You won’t get an answering machine. And we can almost always be out within a day.”
“We really appreciate our customers,” she adds.
