It’s a challenge to come up with a new way to present all the useful information that we like to include in the four Welcome to Davis issues. Personally, this is the 10th time I have worked on these editions, and I regularly argue with myself over what will be of interest to newcomers as well as longtime Davis residents. Should we include the funny story about all the crazy-named streets of Davis ? (Yes.) What about an interview with this year’s ASUCD officers? (Not this time.)
There are some things everyone new should know about living in Davis , and some things of which we all could stand to be reminded. I know that every time I work on these issues I vow to check out some of the parks in town (Frisbee golf!) or see an amazing concert at UC Davis (Cake!).
To that end, this year we are drawing special attention to places and events that every Davisite should know about or rediscover. We are pointing out “hidden gems” for readers to be dazzled by all that is fun and exciting in our town. Longtimers can discover their city anew by digging through these pages for the golden nuggets of information. Look for the gem boxes to help find what you might be missing.
Between today and Thursday, we will publish four Welcome editions:
Today’s issue, “Only in Davis,” focuses on some of what makes this city unique. From our love of bicycles and public art and an A to Z listing from Acme Theater to Zipcar, this issue teaches you how to be a Davisite.
On Tuesday, watch for “Our Community,” which highlights the many opportunities to volunteer and become part of, well, our community. We also fill you in on many recreational outlets.
Wednesday’s “On Campus” edition focuses on happening at UC Davis, and how to get involved in all things Aggie.
On Thursday, we wrap it all up with “On the Go,” which details transportation and recreation options around the town and surrounding area.
All right, we have a lot to cover, so let’s get started!
