A field of their dreams

Long-awaited work has begun on the Davis High softball field in Community Park. The improvements — which were unanimously approved by the Board of Education in June — include a new, permanent fence in the outfield, upgrades to the batting cages, a bullpen and eventually some trees to be planted down the third-base side. Current construction — pictured — includes dugouts. Improvements to the field have been in limbo as city and school district officials tried to reach an accord on the field that straddles both agencies’ property lines. The two sides reached a deal with a possible nudging by Title IX implications, since the DHS boys’ baseball diamond is furnished and improved. The new field will be open to all softball groups, with reservations made through the school district.
