UC Davis golfer Luke Vivolo crushed the competition at Almaden Country Club during an amateur qualifying event to earn a berth at the U.S. Amateur Championship. The junior will compete against the nation’s top amateurs Aug. 11-17 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga.

One of only two players to shoot under par at Almaden, Vivolo’s carded a minus-9, seven shots ahead of the event’s runner-up. After posting a 66 — the lowest first-round figure among all competitors — Vivolo pulled away in the final round to record a 67.

Not only did he earn his second straight medal, but Vivolo also notched the largest margin of victory by an Aggie at any U.S. Amateur qualifier.

Vivolo’s impressive performance extends the Aggies’ streak of success at a qualifying event; recent UCD graduate Matt Hansen also finished first at his respective regionals in 2010 and 2011.
