A late run by Loyola Marymount kept the UC Davis men from taking third at the Western Water Polo Association tournament on Sunday, but the fourth-seeded Aggies gave the second-seeded Lions all they could handle.

Eleventh-ranked LMU, however, scored four goals in the final three minutes to pull away from No. 16 UCD, 12-7. The Aggies finished their season at 14-18.

UCD got two goals each from senior Colin Hicks and sophomore Chris Richardson, and single tallies from senior Jared Clapham, junior Stuart Dooley and sophomore Trevor Allen, a Davis High graduate.

After the Aggies were within 5-4 at halftime, a goal by Allen and two by Hicks returned the deficit to one goal at 8-7 with six minutes remaining. But LMU’s Milotin  Miltrovic scored twice while John Mikuzis and Seth Coldren each tallied once in the final three minutes to clinch a win for the Lions.

Freshman goalie Philip Bates had 10 saves for UCD.

Later, Aggie senior Matt Vowell was named to the all-tournament first team, while Hicks picked up second-team honors. Vowell scored four goals in UCD’s semifinal battle with top-seeded UC San Diego on Saturday. Hick, meanwhile, tallied two assists, two steals, a field block and a five-meter goal in Friday’s first-round win over Santa Clara.
