The UC Davis women took an early 1-0 lead by taking two of three doubles matches in Wednesday’s home opener against Nevada at the Marya Welch Tennis Center, but the Wolf Pack captured five of six singles matches to defeat the Aggies, 5-2.

UCD will begin its two-match Big West road trip to No. 46 Long Beach State and UC Riverside with a 2-3 overall record, Nevada improves to 4-1 with the result.

UCD’s Megan Heneghan and Melissa Kobayakawa opened the match by shutting out Caroline Konigsfeldt and Beatriz Garcia Planas, 8-0, to put the Aggies (2-3) one step away from capturing the first point of the day.

The locals officially earned that point when Layla Sanders and Nicole Koehly won, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles.

Kobayakawa got her second victory of the day when she topped the Wolf Pack’s Sheila Smiley, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4 singles, but that would be the Aggies’ final win of the match.

Nevada came from behind by taking the next five singles matchups from UCD.

The Aggies now head on the road, where they will open Big West play with a Saturday (11 a.m.) match at Long Beach State.
