Aggies drop Big West opener in OT

IRVINE — Trailing by as many as six points in the second half, the UC Davis men’s basketball team rallied behind sophomore guard Corey Hawkins — who scored a game-high 21 points — to take a two-point lead with 11 seconds left against UC Irvine in Saturday night’s Big West opener at the Bren Events Center.

However, a jumper from Anteater Daman Starring knotted the score at 58-58 to force overtime. In the five-minute extra period, UCI did all the scoring for a 69-58 victory.

Of the last four UCD overtime games, three have taken place against the Anteaters. Two OTs were needed to declare a victor when these teams faced each another inside The Pavilion on Jan. 29, 2011.

In addition to Hawkins, who now has posted double-digit scoring in 11 of the Aggies’ 12 games this season, junior swingman Josh Ritchart set a season-high with 15 points.

UCI (7-7) took 26 shots from the free-throw line, compared to four for UCD (4-8), a season-low. The Aggies previous low was 11 free-throw attempts at Idaho on Dec. 1.

UCD will return to action on Saturday at home against Pacific at 7 p.m.
