Aggies fall behind early in baseball loss to No. 25 Stanford

By May 10, 2011

STANFORD — Freshman catcher Spencer Brann hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning for UC Davis, but No. 25 Stanford held on to an early lead to defeat the Aggies, 11-4, on Tuesday at Sunken Diamond in Stanford.

UCD lost its second straight contest following a six-game winning streak to fall to 15-27 overall, while the Cardinal improved to 27-16.

In the Aggies three-run seventh inning, pinch hitter C.J. Blom led off with a double down the right-field line. Brann, who also entered the game as a pinch hitter, took the first pitch over the right-field fence.

Later in the frame, Justin Andrade and Ryan Allgrove hit back-to-back singles, then Seth Batty walked to load the bases with only one out. A passed ball brought Andrade home and allowed the runners to advance, but UCD would score no more.

The Aggies first run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning when Scott Heylman led off with a double, then came home on sacrifice fly by Scott Lyman. At that point, however, Stanford was already ahead 9-1.

Blom was 2-for-2, Andrade went 2-for-2 and seven other UCD batters recorded hits. Reliever Joe Biagini had a positive outing, giving up one run on three hits and striking out four in three innings.

The Aggies are back home Wednesday for a 2:30 p.m. game against Santa Clara.
