RIVERSIDE — UC Davis junior Kevin Barker finished 5-for-6 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs and three other Aggies had three hits on the night, but a seven-run sixth inning rally came up just short as host UC Riverside held off the the locals, 12-9, on Thursday night at the Riverside Sports Complex.

UCD (16-18) fell to 3-7 in Big West Conference play.

But the Highlanders (15-18, 4-3) struck early and often, plating 10 of their 12 runs in the first three innings —including a Thomas Walker grand slam in the second — to take a 10-1 advantage.

But the Aggie pitchers settled down, setting the stage for the huge sixth inning. In it, UCD sent 11 batters to the plate, cutting the lead to 10-8.

The rally started with five straight hits, including run-scoring knocks by Spencer Brann, Tanner Bily and pinch hitter Brian Ruhm. Later in the frame, Barker hit a two-run single up the middle and an RBI groundball finished the scoring.

Tino Lipson, Brann and Bily each had three hits for the Aggies, who return to the Riverside Sports Complex for a 6 p.m. game Friday. UCD fans can watch it live on ESPN3.com.
