After a pair of close conference losses on Friday and Saturday, the UC Davis women’s water polo team is 0-5 in Big West play, but just six goals away from being 5-0.

The most recent outings at Schaal Aquatics Center — a 7-6 loss to No. 7 UC Irvine on a buzzer-beating goal Friday and a 9-8 defeat at the hands of No. 9 Long Beach State on Saturday — sent the 15th-ranked Aggies’ overall record to 12-14.

Against the 49ers (21-4, 2-2), UCD senior Carmen Eggert scored four of her five goals at the start of the game, helping the Aggies to 4-2 and 6-4 first-half leads.

Eggert scored three goals in the first quarter and another in the second, while senior Jessica Dunn scored two of her three goals in the second frame.

But after that, LBSU began to chip away. The visitors trailed just 6-5 at halftime and took the lead for good in the fourth quarter. Eggert scored her final goal with 25 seconds left, but the Aggies couldn’t equalize.

UCD goalkeeper Riane Woods had eight saves in the loss.

On Friday, Anteater Cambria Shockley scored on a free throw with no time remaining to edge the Aggies, who have lost six one-goal games in March.

Eggert scored two goals for UCD, while Dunn, Erin Schlueter, Kathryn Bailey and Elsie Fullerton, a Davis High graduate, each added one. Another former Blue Devil, Keelia Houston, contributed an assist for the Aggies, who led 4-3 at the half.

The team traded goals through the second half, with UCI taking its first advantage, 6-5, early in the fourth period. Fullerton, however, scored the tying goal on an assist from Paige Oreglia with 1:19 to play.

Neither team could score on the their next possessions until the Anteaters took control on a ball-under violation with 17 seconds remaining. Shockley drew a minor foul at the 5-meter line with mere seconds left, then lobbed her free throw into the cage as time expired.

UCD is back at Schaal on Friday for a 4 p.m. Big West game against Hawaii.
