Sports briefs: Another award for Aggie gymnastics
For proof that the UC Davis women’s gymnastics team is off to a strong start, fans need look no further than the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s weekly awards.
An Aggie has been chosen for that honor in three of the 2012 season’s first four weeks. Most recently, junior Katie Yamamura earned her second award in January — the sixth MPSF accolade of her career — for her performance at Friday’s triangular meet against California and Seattle Pacific.
Yamamura scored a career-high 39.125 to capture the individual all-around, dominating the field with a 9.850 on vault. She also tied for the balance beam win with a 9.700 and placed second on uneven bars (9.775) and floor exercise (9.825).
The all-around score that Yamamura used to help UCD score a season-best 191.600, ranks third in school history, improving on the 39.100 she posted in her freshman year. Flora Bare set the school record of 39.200 in 2003.
Michelle Ho won this season’s other MPSF weekly award for the Aggies, who will return to action at Cal on Sunday.
UCD softball
The Aggies were picked to finish seventh in the Big West on Tuesday, as the conference released its 2012 Preseason Softball Coaches Poll.
The annual poll proved that the race for the 2012 championship is bound to be a tight one as defending champion Pacific and Long Beach State tied for the top spot with 59 points each. The Beach finished as the runner-up in 2011.
Following the top two spots, Cal State Fullerton was picked third (42 points) ahead of UC Santa Barbara (37), Cal State Northridge (34) and Cal Poly (26).
UCD, with 20 points, and UC Riverside round out the poll.
The locals begin the 2012 season when they host the three-day Aggie Stampede I, beginning Feb. 10. Games against Loyola Marymount, Nevada and Boise State are on the UCD slate for that event.
UCD football party
Fans with an eye on the future of the UC Davis football program are invited to join head coach Bob Biggs and other staff members at for the annual National Signing Day Party at Aggie Stadium on Wednesday.
The event, which begins at 5 p.m. in the Bruce Edwards Club Room, will feature a brief social gathering followed by an overview of this season’s incoming players and a highlight video of the recruiting class.
Per NCAA rules, no prospects or family of prospects are permitted to be in attendance.
For addition coverage, the Aggies will provide a Signing Day Central Page at www.ucdavisaggies.com on Wednesday as well as updates on www.facebook.com/UCDavisAggies and https://twitter.com/#!/UCDavisAggies as student-athletes commit to UCD.
