Sports briefs: UCD’s Foley gets a win at MPSF swim championships

Kayleigh Foley won the 50-yard freestyle race on Thursday to earn the first individual title for the UC Davis women’s swimming team, which moved into third place on Day 2 of the MPSF Championship meet at East Los Angeles College.

Foley won her second consecutive MPSF 50 free title by recording a season best and NCAA B Standard time of 22.78. The Aggies had a total of three B times on Thursday to help them get to 185 points through 13 events.UC Santa Barbara (258) leads the event with a slight edge over BYU (244.5).

UCD’s Bridget Bugbee had a season best (4:55) in the consolation finals of the 500 free, finishing 11th, with Grace Benefield touching behind her in 4:59.27.

Katie Edwards had a lifetime-best 2:00.63 for the Aggies in the 200 individual medley, taking third in an NCAA B time. Jenah Dawson (2:04.60) and Sara Ramos (2:07.08) also swam lifetime bests, while Sabrina Cochrane managed a season best (2:04.52) in that race.

Hilary Hunt placed in the finals of the 50 free, managing an eighth-place finish in 23.72, then teamed with Morgan Lee, Megan Leung and Foley to record a B Standard time (3:42.75) and take second in the 400 medley relay.

The Aggie divers also got started on Thursday at the Air Force Academy. Jennifer Meyer paced UCD, finishing first in the 3-meter consolation finals (224.50). Behind Meyer were Lauren Jesse (202.00), Shannon Stewart (191.20) and Alexandra Richardson (190.35).

UCD men’s basketball

Fox Sports Arizona will televise Saturday’s ESPN Sears BracketBuster game between the Aggies and Northern Arizona beginning at 6 p.m. from Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff.

The station is available on DirecTV Channel 686 and Dish Network Channel 415. Check with your cable or satellite provider for availability.

UCD has played well recently, winning two of its past three games, and can always be heard on KSAC 105.5 FM or through www.ucdavisaggies.com.

AquaStarz

Interested in synchronized swimming? A preseason meeting for those who would like to join Davis’ competitive synchronized swimming team is set for 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at the AYSO Building near Community Pool.

Parents of current and potential new members of the Davis AquaStarz synchronized swimming team are invited to the meeting to learn about the swim schedule, league competition and the annual synchronized swimming show.

If your swimmer can swim the length of a city pool using basic strokes she or he could qualify for the team. Swimmers ages 6 to 18 may qualify, based on coaches’ recommendations.
