UCD roundup: Aggies hold court at home
The UC Davis women’s tennis team, ranked 64th in the nation, dominated in singles play on Saturday, winning five matches in straight sets to capture a 6-1 win over San Francisco at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
In their home opener, the Aggies snapped a four-match losing streak — all road losses to ranked teams. UCD improved to 2-4 on the season, while the Dons dropped to 1-2.
Aggies Megan Heneghan and Kelly Chui started the day with an 8-1 win over Julia Wartenburger and Milica Hadzi Tanovic in the No. 1 doubles position, but USF responded with two wins to steal the doubles points. In the No. 3 doubles match, UCD’s Layla Sanders and Ellie Edles battled back from an early deficit but the Don’s team of Alana McMahon and Melinda Akerbrant hung on for a 9-7 win.
After a slight defeat in doubles, the Aggies took control in singles competition. Chui was the first to wrap up a win, downing Hadzi Tanovic in the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-3. Dahra Zamudio added a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Marina Nikolic in the No. 1 spot and Heneghan cruised to a win against Wartenburger in another 6-3, 6-3 result.
Lauren Curry posted the deciding victory at No. 4 singles, taking a 6-4, 6-2 win, while Edles and Nicole Koehly made it a perfect effort for UCD in singles play, taking 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) and 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (9) victories, respectively.
The Aggies will continue with their weekend homestand on Sunday, playing host to Fresno State at 11 a.m.
UCD women’s water polo
Senior Carey Faber scored four goals and junior Jessica Dunn added three to help the 14th-ranked Aggies to within a goal of No. 5 San Jose State for the second straight weekend during the Stanford Invitational at Avery Aquatic Center on Saturday. UCD fell to the Spartans by a 13-12 final after losing to the host Cardinal, 18-6, earlier that day.
After having played six of their first eight contests against teams ranked in the Top 5, the Aggies are now 2-6 on the year.
Faber’s career-high output marked her first hat trick since her sophomore year of 2010, when she posted two. She had two even-strength tallies and two on 6-on-5 opportunities. Davis High graduates Ariel Feeney and Elsie Fullerton, along with Alicia Began, Hannah Curran and Carmen Eggert had one goal to round out the UCD total.
Junior goalkeeper Riane Woods tallied 12 saves for the Aggies, who came back from an 11-8 deficit to a one-goal margin in the fourth. In similar fashion, UCD erased a 6-4 halftime deficit and claimed a one-goal lead in the previous meeting with SJSU on Jan. 28.
Dunn and freshman Keelia Houston, another former Blue Devil, each had two goals in the morning loss to Stanford. Fullerton and senior Kaylee Queipo-Miller netted one apeice. The Cardinal, however, had scored seven unanswered in the first quarter and held an 11-1 lead at the break before UCD managed five goals in the second half.
The Aggies continue play at the Stanford Invite on Sunday, when they take on No. 3 USC at 9:10 a.m. and then will play another game against an opponent to be determined in the afternoon.
UCD men’s golf
Josh Granger shot a 2-under 70 to tie for 39th overall, Jonny Baxter carded his second eagle of the tournament, and the Aggies shot a 10-over 298, their lowest score of the tournament, on the final day of action at the 22nd Annual Amer Ari at Waikoloa Beach, Hawaii.
With sophomore standout Matt Hansen unable to compete due to illness, UCD received scores from just four players throughout the event and finished in 20th place.
Granger was the Aggies’ top finisher, shooting even for the tournament, while freshman Luke Vivolo tied for 87th at 9-over 225. Andrew Haggen tied for 89th at 10-over and Baxter finished with a three-day score of 236.
Texas, the No. 1 team in the country, won the event by five strokes, finishing at 30-under, while second-place USC shot a collective 25-under. Stanford was third, while Georgia Tech and UCLA rounded out the top five.
USC’s Jeffrey Kang shared individual medalist honors with Texas’ Jordan Spieth as each player finished at 11-under 205.
Granger shot a solid third round, closing out his front nine at 4-under after picking up five straight pars and four consecutive birdies. He dropped to 1-under with bogeys on the sixth, seventh and eighth holes, but regrouped with three pars and another birdie to finish at 2-under 70 for the day. Granger improved on his second-round score by six strokes.
After making UCD men’s golf program history with a double eagle in Wednesday’s first round, Baxter eagled the par-5 18th hole on Friday and shot four strokes better overall than the previous day to finish at 6-over for the round.
Vivolo’s third round was highlighted by birdies on the first and 11th holes as well as 11 pars, as he finished at a 3-over 75 for the third straight round. Haggen also finished at 3-over after posting birdies on the fourth and 12th holes.
UCD will compete next at the Del Walker Match Play Championship, hosted by Long Beach State beginning Feb. 27.
UCD field hockey
Five standout high school student-athletes signed national letters of intent with the Aggies last week, and will officially join the UCD program this fall.
Joining the Aggies are Erica Cohen from Torrey Pines High in San Diego, Hannah Drawbridge from La Costa Canyon High in Carlsbad, Martha Duterte from Archbishop Mitty in San Jose, Jamie Garcia from Fallbrook Union near San Diego, and Danielle Koehne from Leigh (San Jose).
UCD will be entering its fourth season at the NCAA Division I level this fall after returning to varsity status in 2009. The Aggies, who are members of the NorPac Conference, highlighted their 2011 season by earning votes for the Kookaburra/NFHCA poll.
Head coach Vianney Campos is confident this year’s recruiting class will help the program continue to grow.
“The class of 2012 brings a wealth of versatility,” Campos said. “They cover all four positions on the field, and with the exception of Erica (a goalkeeper), all of (them) have the knowledge and capacity to play in a few different positions. This is very exciting for us because they will be able to jump in and impact the program wherever it’s needed.
“We know they are committed student-athletes that will help continue to develop this program and take us to the next level. They are one of the best recruiting classes I have had the privilege of being a part of in my last six seasons of coaching.”
