It’s hard to add intrigue to a championship contest, but if it’s possible, Saturday’s Sac-Joaquin Section girls soccer finale will hold extra meaning for the two squads involved.
Davis and Franklin high schools split their two regular-season matches and shared the Delta Valley Conference title this spring with identical 9-1 records. But on Saturday, someone will have the last laugh.
The two teams will settle their differences at Cosumnes Oaks High School at 4 p.m., with the winner earning bragging rights — and a little thing called the section crown.
The Blue Devils dropped a 1-0 decision at Franklin in the league opener, but that was on April Fool’s Day. Sparked by Kalani Ratnasiri’s hat trick on April 18, DHS got revenge at Yudin Field, winning 3-2.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats (16-3) edged another longtime Devil nemesis, St. Francis, 1-0 to reach the title tilt.
Davis trounced Vallejo, 8-0, then got single goals from Gaby Herrera in 1-0 wins over Granite Bay (quarterfinals) and Oak Ridge (semis) to find themselves in the finals. Herrera injured her shoulder on Thursday and the locals hope the fantastic freshman is able to play Saturday.
