Sports briefs: River Cats take Game 1 of doubleheader

Sacramento’s Daric Barton was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBI as the River Cats topped the Rainiers 8-5 in the seven-inning first game of a doubleheader in Tacoma.

Four Sacramento batters had two hits, including Nick Buss, Andy Parrino, Shane Peterson and Barton.

Republic FC falls to Albion

The Sacramento Republic FC dropped its second consecutive match Friday to West Bromwich Albion but avoided the shutout as J.J. Koval found the net in the 73rd minute.

Sacramento, which fell 3-1 to Albion, will play host to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 27, in a USL Pro contest at Bonney Field. Republic FC is expected to establish a new league attendance mark at the game.

Local brings home grass court tennis hardware

Ann Pellow, a local tennis teaching pro, was awarded the bronze ball in singles and the silver ball in doubles at the national grass court championships at Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia.

She defeated Robyn Russell from Charlottesville, Va., 6-3, 6-1, on Friday to take third in the women’s 55 division. In doubles, she teamed with Kim Lackey from Clayton and finished second. Pellow and Lackey lost to Susan Wright from Grand Junction, Colo., and Tina Karawsky from Glendale, 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.
