Baseball roundup: Ninth-inning grand slam sinks A’s in Detroit

DETROIT — Rajai Davis hit his third career grand slam with one out in the ninth inning, giving the Detroit Tigers a victory, 5-4, over the Oakland Athletics.

Oakland closer Sean Doolittle (2-2) was given a three-run lead to work with in the ninth, but only managed one out. Nick Castellanos and Alex Avila started the inning with singles. Eugenio Suarez struck out but Doolittle walked Austin Jackson — just the second walk he has issued this season — to load the bases for Davis.

River Cats

Fresno’s Chris Dominguez hit a solo home run in the 11th inning to lift the Grizzlies over the Sacramento River Cats, 4-3, in the opener of a four-game series at Raley Field.

The Cats (48-36) took advantage of Fresno left fielder Adalberto Santos’ eighth-inning error that allowed catcher Luis Exposito to reach third. He scored from there on Shane Peterson’s sacrifice fly, tying the game at 3-3.

As part of his rehab stint with the Grizzlies (42-43), San Francisco Giant Brandon Belt was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.
