ELK GROVE — Earlier this week, after a rare Delta League loss, Davis High boys soccer coach Alex Park said he wanted to see his team bounce back at Elk Grove on Wednesday in preparation to play well in a Saturday showdown with Jesuit at Bonney Field.
Park got his wish against the Thundering Herd as the Blue Devils excelled on both ends of the pitch and came away with a convincing 7-0 win Wednesday.
DHS (10-3, 6-2) played lights-out defense, thanks mostly to a stellar outing by the back line made up of seniors Kyle Fix, Joe Rainer and Tim Baxter, and junior Jovanni Morales.
And with that quartet defending so well, the Devils really needed just one goal — which they got when senior Jesse Hopp tallied off a Fix assist. Then they rattled the cage six more times for good measure.
In the offensive onslaught, juniors Matteo Sorrentino, Francis Avoce and Chris Marelich each converted penalty kicks, 11th-grader Ricky Gonzales scored off a corner kick and Hopp set up a goal by senior D.J. Villegas. A goal by senior Will Stukas, which was assisted by Sorrentino, completed the local scoring.
Davis now looks ahead to Saturday, when it will take on the rival Marauders beginning at 7 p.m. at Bonney Field, home of the Sacramento Republic FC.
Tickets are being sold by Blue Devil players, or fans can contact Park at [email protected] Prices are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors, with kids 5 and under getting in free. Parking will be $10.
