Blue Devil girls go goal-crazy on Grant

Other than the 90 degree temperatures, this one was fun.

And even the heat in Davis High girls soccer team’s 10-0 win over Grant on Monday was something Blue Devil coach Sara Stone appreciated.

“It was good for us to play in (the heat) because it’s a good test of our fitness,” Stone said. “This was one of those games that is nice because we have multiple goal scorers, which shows other teams we can be dangerous from different areas. That makes it harder for them to prepare for us.”

Gaby Herrera led six different DHS scorers as she followed up a first-half goal with three more tallies in the second half. Kalani Ratnasiri had two early goals with Clara Goin, Suleikha Sutter, Sophia Hernandez and Jaha McClean each finding the net once.

The first two goals came in the first two minutes as the Devils (14-4-1, 6-1 Delta Valley Conference) captured the momentum and didn’t let it go.

“Setting the tone early is important,” Stone said. “Grant still worked hard, but after those first two goals they kind of got their heads down a little bit.”

The offensive explosion also allowed Stone to try different lineups and formations as the locals look ahead to the stretch run of the DVC and then the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

Davis heads to Laguna Creek on Wednesday, then finishes its conference schedule with a pair of contests next week.
