Blue Devil JV boys keep rolling along

By January 24, 2011

From Friday\’s opening tip, the juggernaut Davis High boys junior varsity basketball team was in control of a 78-41 Delta Valley Conference victory over Monterey Trail at home.

\n

The win ran the Blue Devils\’ record to 16-4 overall and 3-0 in DVC play.

\n

“We got into our offensive flow early,” DHS coach Bob Silva said. “We played an aggressive first quarter and our fullcourt press caused about 25 turnovers, (most of them) in the first half.”

\n

Hitting on all cylinders, the Devils opened up a 55-20 lead at intermission.

\n

Silva said his team — which used a trap-and-run style of defense — turned most of their first-half stops into points:

\n

“We took off the press halfway through the third quarter and coasted home, (which) emphasized our defensive skills and showed the depth of our bench … again — although we had players with high points — our team showed balanced scoring.”

\n

Hayden Russell\’s 21 points led all Davis scorers with Grant Dickerson and Adam King each adding 10.

\n

Dickerson also had nine rebounds to pace the Blue Devils, who also got five caroms from both Russell and King. Nick Denton added four.

\n

Russell handed out five assists and Dickerson had four for the winners.

\n

“We are training to have our players look for their shooters,” Silva added. “And we continue to improve defensively. Our players understand our strategy and we continue to refine that strategy at practice.

\n

“We\’re looking forward to playing Franklin (Wednesday at home, 5:30 p.m.). It should be a very good game against a school that is typically very strong.”
