Blue Devil Segedin reaches DVC singles final

Blue Devil junior Dan Segedin powered his way to the finals of the Delta Valley Conference singles tournament with a pair of wins Monday at the Davis High Tennis Complex.

Segedin will face Elk Grove’s Dylan King on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. to decide the title. The same day, the top duos in the DVC will compete for the league doubles championship.

On Monday, Segedin earned a first-round bye as the tournament’s top seed, then defeated an opponent from Monterey Trail, 7-6, 6-1. He followed that with a 6-2, 6-2 semifinal win over a Laguna Creek player.

“It was nice because (Segedin) played two pretty solid players,” said DHS coach Dale Hersch. “He was hitting the ball very well, especially his forehand. He had a big serve and a big forehand so he pretty much overpowered both guys, and was more consistent.”

Playing as the No. 2 seed, King defeated Devil junior Louis Pak 6-0, 6-3 to eliminate Pak from the tournament.

King then beat the No. 3 seed, Tommy Luu of Franklin, to reach the finals. Luu had previously gotten past Davis junior Tris Dutta, 6-3, 7-5.

“I was really impressed with (King), he’s really improved a lot from last year,” Hersch said. “If he plays like he did (Monday) it’s going to be a battle (Wednesday), but I still think Dan will win.”
