For the Davis High girls tennis team, Delta Valley Conference matches could easily be renamed delta breeze matches, and Tuesday’s 2013 league opener was no different.
The Blue Devils went on the road to blank Monterey Trail, 9-0, with only a couple of competitive matchups keeping things interesting.
After a grueling preseason schedule, coach Sally Hosley was happy that she was able to use more of the DHS roster against the Mustangs.
Junior Michelle Bachigalupi got into the lineup at No. 6 singles and was impressive, winning 6-0, 6-3, while a pair of Devil freshmen — Maya McHale and Maggie Whittemore — got their first doubles victory, 5-7, 6-2, (10-6) at No. 3.
“I love these league matches because I get to play girls who might not normally be in the top 12,” Hosley said. “(Bachigalupi) was very steady throughout her match. (No. 3 doubles) was a tough match and the wind was picking up, but both Maya and Maggie are so athletic that they were able to change up their game and adjust.”
Another seldom-used Davis duo, Sherry Zheng and Becky Yang, looked like they had been playing together for years in dispatching their opponents, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles.
The other close match came at No. 1 doubles, where locals Katherine Murdoch and Cat Archer survived a tough second set to come back and win, 6-1, 4-6, (10-2).
Meanwhile, the top Blue Devil singles players made short work of their Mustang foes. No. 1 Kailynn Yang and No. 3 Angela Donahue each posted 6-0, 6-0 victories, Lauren Duan won, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 and Cat Paw U crushed Monterey Trail’s No. 2 singles player, 6-1, 6-2. Jenna Mould was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 4.
Next, DHS is home for a Thursday DVC match against Elk Grove. First swing is set for 3:45 p.m.
“It’s nice to get our league matches underway,” Hosley said. “During the month of October, our matches won’t be as competitive, but it’s a good time for the girls to work on various aspects of their games. Hopefully we will just keep improving.”
