Two missed meets due to rain had the Davis High track team athletes eager to compete, and it showed at the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday. A small contingent of field event and runners qualified for this prestigious meet, which draws athletes from all over California and several other states.
Despite rain throughout much of the meet, the Blue Devil tracksters posted some outstanding results.
DHS’ Ian Rock, who is ranked ninth in the state in the pole vault, won that event with a 14-11 leap and just narrowly missed attempts at 15-8.
Rock also was part of the Devil boys’ 4-by-400 team — along with Lee LeVerrier, Matt Austin and Alec Zavala — whose time of 3:22.57 placed them third out of 40 teams. The DHS squad put up the fastest time of all Sac-Joaquin Section teams at the meet.
Freshman distance runner Sophie Meads had a great 3,000 race, according to Davis distance coach Bill Gregg, running conservatively for the first few laps and then methodically moving up in the field of 16 runners to a fourth-place finish in her section with a time of 10:38.65.
Trevor Halsted (sixth place) and Brian De La Mora (eighth) raced in the top sections of the boys 3,000 on Friday, posting strong early-season times of 8:43.80 and 8:50.31, respectively.
In Saturday’s mile race, Halsted’s 4:25.91 got him 10th in the top section, while De La Mora placed 12th in the third section with a 4:32.06. Fellow distance runner Braeden Van Deynze ran 9:26.12 in the 3,000.
While Friday’s events were relatively rain-free, much of Saturday’s competition came amid heavy downpours. Despite the conditions, Blue Devil jumpers Nate Stenson (5-10.75 in the high jump) and Austin (40.07.75 in the triple jump) had strong showings.
Head coach Spencer Elliott also called Courtney Williams’ 11.43 100 a solid performance, and was pleased with Hannah Krovetz’s 400 time of 62.61.
DHS also put together some strong relay performances, with the 4-by-800 teams both running well. Paul Mohr, Hamid Naemeh, Mac Harvey and Andrew Croft placed 13th out of 38 boys teams with a time of 8:19.03, while Meads, Laney Teaford, Kathy Dooley, and Krovetz were 18th out of 31 girls squads with a 10:00.81.
Krovetz teamed up with Lauren Holtz, Sarah Owens and Jordan Banwarth in the 4-by-400 to place 15th out of 39 teams with a 4:10.38.
In Friday’s distance relays, LeVerrier, Mohr and Harvey joined Dan Gonzales in the distance medley to capture 15th overall. The girls distance medley relay of Teaford, Banworth, Dooley and Tess Williams was 11th in their section.
