With ace Matt Trask on the mound, even against a pesky lineup like Laguna Creek’s, the Davis High baseball team always feels pretty good.

After putting a seven-spot on the board in the top of the third inning Thursday, the Blue Devils were feeling great.

As expected, DHS rode Trask the rest of the way and finished off the Cardinals, 8-3, in a Delta Valley Conference road matchup.

“He threw the ball well, he was throwing a lot of strikes,” Ariola said after his big right-hander posted nine strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. “He was in control the whole game.”

Even after allowing three runs in the bottom of the sixth — which were of little consequence with the Devils (16-5, 10-0) already ahead 8-0 — Trask regained his rhythm, struck out the final batter of the inning, then set LCHS down 1-2-3 with two punchouts in the seventh.

The Davis offense got him all he needed in that big third frame. Trey Golston (remember that name) led off with a single and Brett Bloomfield followed with a bunt single on which Golston scampered to third. One batter later, John Ariola walked to load the bases for Chris Daunt, whose two-run singled brought home the first two local runs.

After a Bobby Young sacrifice fly plated Ariola, Trask worked a walk and Ryan Kreidler’s grounder was mishandled by the second baseman, allowing Daunt to score.

When catcher Hayden Duer earned a walk, the bases were loaded for Golston. The speedster sent a grounder to first but the Cardinal pitcher was late covering and Golston beat it out. Meanwhile, with one run already in, Kreidler was tearing around third and headed home. The freshmen scored ahead of a wild throw and, as the ball rolled into the dugout, Duer came in to make it 7-0.

Trask’s RBI double in the top of the fourth completed the scoring for DHS, which is home Friday for a 4:15 p.m. rematch with Laguna Creek.

“We are playing solid but we have to turn around and play Laguna again (Friday),” coach Ariola said. “They aren’t bad, they got nine hits (Thursday) off Matt, so we’ve got to come to play.”
