Davis buckles up for Colfax, Homecoming
Stop the run + play strong pass defense = a victory.
The age-old football formula applies Friday night for Davis High when a potent D-IV Colfax brings its slash-and-burn offense to town for Blue Devil Homecoming festivities.
Using an efficient-but-undersized offensive line — only one Falcon trench-dweller weighs more than 205 pounds — Colfax has been able to average 305 yards rushing and 44 points a game in carding a sparkling 3-0 record.
And should CHS tailback Hunter Perez (590 yards, eight touchdowns) sputter, quarterback Austin Young (614 yards and six TDs) can call on his three years of varsity experience to put his team back on solid ground.
Game time is 7:15 p.m. on Halden Field at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium.
About that smallish Colfax line …
Veteran Falcon coach Tony Martello likes to use misdirection, quickness and daring play-calling in outfoxing opponents.
DHS (2-1), with its gap-assignment defense, could use its line’s size advantage to hold sway in the trenches while sending a banged-up corps of linebackers into the holes, hoping to bottle up Perez’s ground game.
According to defensive coordinator Randy Malmgren, Bray Harwood could start alongside Austin Day at inside linebacker Friday. Harwood starts if Corey Nelson (ankle) can’t go. Mike McTygue (knee) is on the shelf. Grant Dickerson will start outside with Brenden MacDonald at DE/LB on the other end.
Day is coming back from a concussion suffered in Davis’ 28-12 win over Sacramento on Sept. 9. He did not play in the loss to Wood last week.
After falling behind by three touchdowns, the Blue Devils dropped a 31-21 decision at Colfax in 2010.
