Devils not about to let Wood’s 0-2 record fool them
Will C. Wood High is 0-2. It fields a first-year quarterback and will start a gimpy tailback — if he plays at all.
But the Blue Devils know wounded animals are the most dangerous. And, remember, Friday’s visitors are Wildcats.
“This is another good team. We don’t care about their record,” second-year DHS head coach Steve Smyte reports. “We’ve seen them on film. They’ve lost two close games. They have a big, big front line and they pound you until something breaks loose.”
Wood lost 29-21 to Vanden (2-0) last week and 44-26 to Pioneer (3-0). The ‘Cats smacked Davis, 43-20, a year ago.
WCW tailback Ryan Spinelli, who went over 100 yards last year against the Devils, suffered another ankle injury last Friday. Wildcat officials wouldn’t confirm his status for Friday night.
Quarterback Bryan Stansbury took over the reins this year, but Wood — with a healthy Spinelli — continued to lean on the run. Friday night could be the 6-foot-2 senior’s coming out party.
The vistors also have a host of big dudes in the trench, including 6-foot-3, 315-pound Devan Rices.
Look for DHS (2-0) to see what it can get on the ground with breakout sophomore back Winfred Roberson (382 yards rushing). Should that Wildcat line be immovable, QB Shayne Reagan could fill the air.
Game time is 7:15 p.m. on Halden Field at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium.
