DHS freshmen finish a solid boys hoops season

After winning three of its final five games, the Davis High freshman boys basketball team completed its season with a 9-13 record, including 3-7 in Delta River League play.

The league featured tough teams like Jesuit, Grant and Oak Ridge, but the Blue Devils were able to split games with the Pacers and Trojans.

In each of those wins, both one-point affairs, Bailey Yarrow converted key free throws in the final seconds for DHS. Yarrow led the locals all season in foul shooting, at 73 percent, while Nate Curtis and Quinn Williams were the team’s top scorers, according to coach Dino Clark.

The Devils had trouble with turnovers early in the season, but cleaned up the miscues as the campaign progressed. Meanwhile, the Davis defense was strong for much of the year and players like Dylan Klein, Quentin McCray and Andrew Bolich had numerous steals.

Brett Ryan helped DHS by making close to 30 percent of his 3-pointers and Luke Figueroa, Ben Gore and Deven Sanchez paced the Blue Devils in rebounding.

“I was proud of the freshman players this season,” Clark said. “Each and every one of them contributed to the team. This is a group of players that had great chemistry and team camaraderie. I was very proud to be a part of the development of these freshman players and (get them) ready for the JV level.”

Clark also mentioned that the support from assistant Ron Duer and manager Bob Gore, along with the other parents, was invaluable to the team’s success.
