Boys soccer tryouts moved; other DHS camps loom

As the calendar turns to August, preparations for another full season of Davis High fall athletics almost is underway.

While most returning athletes have been — or will be — informed by their sports’ respective coaches about forms, workouts and report dates, students new to DHS athletics will be interested to know the particulars for their sport of choice.

It’s with particular note that Blue Devil boys soccer coach Alex Park reminds his varsity and JV team hopefuls that tryouts have been changed to Nugget Fields off Pole Line Road in northeast Davis. District officials cite another water-line malfunction at Yudin Field as the reason for relocation.

Here’s a look at who reports when for what sport …

Cross country — Coach: Bill Gregg. Contact info: williamjgregg@aol.com

Practice begins Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Pool solar panels. Team training camp will be Aug. 24-27 at Soda Springs. Practice, beginning Aug. 28, goes from 4 to 6 p.m. every day after school.

Field hockey — Coach: Sandie Marotti-Huckins. Contact info: sandie@marottiperformancegroup.com.

Tryouts will be Aug. 12-13 from 7 to 9:30 a.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium. Marotti-Huckins asks athletes to bring shin guards, mouth guards and water. Mandatory practice begins Aug. 14 at a time to be announced. Summer camp is “highly recommended” and more information is available by emailing the coach.

Football — Interim varsity coach: Marc Hicks. Contact info: mhicks@djusd.net; Junior varsity coach: Mike Satre. Contact info: masatre@ucdavis.edu; freshman coach: Adam Perez. Contact info: adam7@me.com

No-equipment conditioning and testing runs Monday through Friday, Aug. 9, for varsity and JV. A parent and player meeting for all levels will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 in the Davis High Library.

Two-a-day practices start Aug. 12 (8:30-11:30 a.m. and 4-6:30 p.m.) and run through Aug. 23.

The Blue & White Scrimmage will be Aug. 17 at Brown Stadium; the time is to be announced. Then on Aug. 24, the Devils have their first scrimmage (time and opponent TBA), two days before school-session practice moves to once a day.

Girls golf — Coach: Rhonda Mohr. Contact info: mohr@davisgolfacademy.com

Practice starts Aug. 12 at Wildhorse Golf Course (9-11 a.m.). For additional information, Mohr directs prospective Blue Devil golfers to www.davisgolfacademy.com (DHS golf team tab). Players must be able to complete nine holes of golf carrying their own bags. Players also must own their own clubs, says the coach.

Boys soccer — Varsity coach: Park. Contact info: aapark@ucdavis.edu; JV coach: Jesus Mata. Contact info: matajesus11@gmail.com

Tryouts run for four days, Aug. 12-15. Morning tryouts are from 8 to 10 a.m. with evening drills from 4 to 6 p.m. Team selection will be on Aug. 15 and 16. Parks wants athletes to bring cleats, shin guards and water. All action is at Nugget Fields (changed from Yudin Field).

Girls tennis — Coach: Sally Hosley. Contact info: sallyhosley@hotmail.com

Running from 3:30 to 5 p.m., tryouts begin Aug. 14 and continue through Aug. 23. Team practice starts Aug. 26 at 3:50 p.m. All functions are at the Community Park Tennis Complex.

Girls volleyball — Varsity coach: Julie Crawford. Contact info: jcrawford@djusd.net; JV coach: Lyndsay Cantrell. Contact info: lyndsay@browardbuilders.com; freshman coach: TBA

Tryouts are Aug. 12-16 in the DHS South Gym. Ninth-graders will try out from 8 to 10 a.m.; 10th- through 12th-graders from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crawford asks athletes to wear comfortable clothes and bring water and knee pads. Once teams are selected, mandatory practices begin Aug. 19. Times will be announced.

Boys water polo — Varsity coach: Tracy Stapleton. Contact info: tstapleton@djusd.net

Practice opens Aug. 19. On Mondays and Wednesdays, sessions are from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they’re from 6 to 7:30 p.m., all at Arroyo Pool. An Aug. 19 parents’ meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Arroyo. The first three days of practice will comprise the tryout period, according to Stapleton, who adds that final teams will be announced Aug. 22 after practice.

Girls water polo — Varsity coach: Doug Wright. Contact info: dwright@djusd.net

Practice starts Aug. 19, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Arroyo Pool. A parents meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 and the first three days of practice are the tryout period. Teams will be announced Aug. 22.

Note: Baseline concussion screening is mandatory. Testing is valid for two school years, so athletes who completed baseline training in 2012-13 do not need to retest until 2014-15, according to Davis High Athletic Director Dennis Foster. Consent forms for concussion baseline testing and forms for physicals can be found at www.davisseniorhigh.net.
