BRIEFS: UCD\’s Rogers gets a national honor

By
December 18, 2010 |

\n

When the Associated Press votes on its annual Football Championship Subdivision All-America team, UC Davis is never far from their minds. This year, tight end Dean Rogers became most recent Aggie to be honored when the AP announced its picks last week. He joins a distinguished list.

\n

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound senior from Visalia, who was named earlier this month to the AFCA All-America team, is the sixth UCD standout since 2005 to receive AP honors, making the third team. Linebacker Mike Morales earned first-team distinction last year, while free safety Jonathan Barsi (2006) and defensive tackle John Faletoese (2009) also were first-team picks for the Aggies.

\n

Wide receiver Tony Kays (2005) was a second-team selection and offensive lineman Jonathan Compas (2008) received third-team honors.

\n

Rogers, a team captain and three-time all-conference pick, was one of three players from the Great West to earn recognition on this year\’s AP squad, as wide receiver Tysson Poots of Southern Utah was a first-team pick and Cal Poly running back Mark Rodgers joins the UCD player on the third team.

\n

Rogers was second on the Aggie team in catches (30) and receiving yards (404).

\n

\n

Baseball camp

\n

UC Davis will offer a holiday baseball camp for kids ages 7 to 14 Monday through Wednesday at Dobbins Stadium on the UCD campus. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

\n

The coaching staff from UCD will focus on teaching mechanics for throwing, hitting, fielding, base running and the mental aspects of the game. Drills, skills contests and games are planned.

\n

The cost is $150 per player or $250 for two siblings. For information and registration,

\n

visit http://www.collegebaseballcamps.com/UCD or contact Tony Schifano at (408) 569-1163 or [email protected]

\n

\n

Holiday hoops

\n

Davis Hoops will hold its Holiday Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 7 to 14 on Tuesday and Wednesday at Davis High School.

\n

The camp, which will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days, is for both beginning and experienced players. There will be a focus on team and individual fundamental skills but also games and fun

\n

competitions.

\n

The fee is $100 at the door.

\n

Registration forms are available at http://www.davishoops.com or call Carol at (530) 574-7115.

\n

Davis Hoops is a nonprofit basketball club, serving area youth since 2000.

\n

\n

Five Starz volleyball

\n

For girls looking to be part of a competitive volleyball program but not wishing to join a traveling team, Five Starz offers its Starlets program.

\n

The Davis-based volleyball club is bringing back the Starlets after a successful trial run last season, to give players in grades five through nine an opportunity to receive individual instruction, develop their fundamental skills and have a chance to play in organized

\n

competition.

\n

The Starlets program is designed to improve each player\’s overall skills in a fun and competitive environment. Players will practice once a week and participate in a local tournament at the end of the season.

\n

There will be no tryouts, and practices will begin in January and be held on Sunday afternoons.
