LOS ANGELES — Fifteenth-ranked UCLA went on a 13-0 run during the latter part of the first half on Sunday afternoon, breaking away from UC Davis and posting a 65-49 nonconference womens basketball victory at legendary Pauley Pavilion.

\n

Sophomore Vicky Deely canned a career-high five three-pointers and scored a career-best 21 points for UCD, which dropped to 3-1. The Bruins, coming off a double-overtime win at No. 12 Notre Dame on Thursday, remained unbeaten while improving to 4-0. Its their first 4-0 record since 1986.

\n

Guard Marxia Dixon scored 14 points, Jasmine Dixon added 13, Atonye Nyingifa scored 12 and Doreena Campbell tallied 10 for UCLA which outrebounded the Aggies 23-5 in the second half.

\n

Paige Mintun scored 11 points for UCD while guard Hana Asano had four assists and six steals.

\n

\”I was very impressed with UCLA both in terms with their athleticism and with how smartly they played the game,\” said Aggie coach Sandy Simpson. \”They had us back on our heels from the get-go. I thought we played really hard, but they were too skilled and athletic, and were really able to control the game.\”

\n

The Aggies, who had 30 turnovers during Fridays 70-62 win at Pepperdine, were victimized by 32 on Sunday against UCLA which applied fullcourt pressure for much of the game.

\n

The Bruins led 17-16 with under eight minutes to go in the first half, but keyed by four straight points from Nyingifa, went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to lead 30-16 with 3:33 left in the half.

\n

UCD held the Bruins to just two points the rest of the way, getting to within 32-21 at halftime after Asanos steal and layup just before the buzzer.

\n

UCD battled back in the early going after UCLA scored nine straight points to take an 11-3 lead. Deely scored five points — including a three-pointer — as the Aggies scored the next seven points to get within 11-10 with just over 12 minutes to play.

\n

UCD tied the game 13-13 a few minutes later after Blair Shinodas high-bouncing three-pointer. The teams were close before UCLA put together its big run for a 14-point lead. The Aggies had 19 turnovers in the first half but helped counter that with five three-pointers, three of them from Deely who scored 11 points before the break.

\n

Dixon scored four quick points to start the second half to help the Bruins reopen the lead to 36-21. UCLA led by as much as 45-24 but the Aggies rallied to get within 53-41 with 5:32 remaining after going on a 17-8 run. Kasey Riecks, Samantha Meggison and Deely each had treys during that surge. However, that would be as close as the Bruins would let the Aggies get the rest of the way.

\n

Deelys scoring eclipsed her previous high of 15 points which she had last year against Long Beach State, the same game she had three treys, also her previous best.

\n

\”I thought Vicky played very well and Paige and a number of players came in and had good moments as well, but in the end UCLA was just too athletic and too deep,\” said Simpson.

\n

UCD will return to action on Friday, beginning a three-game homestand on Friday against Yale. South Carolina, from the Southeastern Conference, will visit next Sunday afternoon.
