On a chilly Thursday night, the Davis High girls lacrosse team needed an extra spark to get going.
Junior Ceci Cajandig was that fire starter.
Cajandig scored five goals as the Blue Devils overcame an early deficit to beat Oak Ridge, 15-9, at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium.
“It doesn’t matter who she plays against. She always plays her best,” said DHS head coach Jennifer Morris. “She moves so well off the ball and she’s so quick. We know we can count on her. She’s a great player.”
Early in the first half, with the Devils trailing 2-0 to the Trojans (3-1) and looking outmatched, Cajandig got a pass inside from Kylie Drexel and scored. Then, after another Oak Ridge goal, she corralled the ricochet of her own missed shot and found the net again.
“I knew this was going to be a much tougher game and (Oak Ridge) had a big win recently (over California High School) so obviously we were a little worried about that coming in,” Morris said. “Their goalie is outstanding. She had 24 saves in her last game, so we knew we really had to keep the shooting going.”
Davis did just that and goals by Drexel and Kelly Chuck gave the Blue Devils their first lead of the game. After that, DHS began to pull away.
Freshman Sarah Bloise scored inside, before Monica Berry outran an Oak Ridge defender around the side of net and converted on a contested shot attempt. Later, Drexel found the net with 32.5 seconds left in the first half to give the locals a 7-4 advantage at the break.
In the second half, the Trojans looked outmatched.
Paced by Cajandig and Drexel, DHS opened up the period on a 4-0 run to take a 12-4 lead. When Cajandig added two more goals, the locals had clear control of the game.
For the Blue Devils, Drexel again was the orchestrator of the offense, scoring three goals and dishing out three assists. Berry added two goals and two assists, while Chuck, Kiki Tanaka and Natalie Serdahl all had one goal apiece.
Bloise also chipped in two goals in a strong showing.
With the win, the Devils went over .500 for the first time this season at 3-2.
DHS is back on the field on Friday evening, when Northgate comes to town.
