WEST SACRAMENTO — Oakland A’s star outfielder Yoenis Céspedes went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI in his first rehab start of the year, helping the Sacramento River Cats beat the visiting Salt Lake Bees, 6-5, on Thursday night at Raley Field.
The Cats offense was in an immediate groove, scoring once in the first and batting around in a five-run fifth inning that featured RBI singles from Céspedes and Josh Horton, as well as three Salt Lake errors. After singling, Céspedes advanced to second on an error from first baseman Efren Navarro, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a throwing error by catcher Chris Snyder.
Sacramento starter Sonny Gray (2-1) earned the win, striking out five and walking two while allowing eight hits and one earned run in six innings. Lefty Hideki Okajima tossed a scoreless seventh before veteran right-hander Brian Gordon gave up a grand slam to Salt Lake right fielder Matt Young to cut the River Cats’ lead to one.
Cats closer Dan Otero came in to throw a perfect ninth inning, earning his fifth save.
Sacramento infielders Horton and Grant Green each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The River Cats — who will once again have Céspedes in the lineup — will host Salt Lake again on Friday night (7:05 p.m.) at Raley Field.
