Clutch Cats win in 12

By From page B1 | August 15, 2014

WEST SACRAMENTO — Third baseman Alden Carrithers sent the 7,337 fans home from Raley Field late but happy as his RBI single in the 12th inning gave the Sacramento River Cats a 5-4 win over the Colorado Spring Sky Sox.

The Sky Sox (50-76) actually scored first, taking an early 1-0 lead and still held an advantage into the bottom of the ninth.

But the Cats (71-55), down 4-3 at this point, got a one-out single from center fielder Billy Burns, which was followed by another single by Nick Buss — that one extended his hitting streak to 20 games. That brought up designated hitter Kyle Blanks, who smacked a game-tying single up the middle.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Carrithers drove home Shane Peterson for Sacramento’s 12th walk-off win over the season.

River Cats reliever Philip Humber got the victory, moving him to 6-4 on the year, while catcher Luis Martinez reached base four times, twice on hits.

Sacramento and Colorado Springs square off again Friday at Raley Field as Cats southpaw Drew Pomeranz (2-0, 3.12 ERA) takes the mound at 7:05 p.m.
