Dana Cruse pitched a masterful game, leading the UC Davis softball team to a 3-2 in over St. Mary’s in the opener of a Wednesday doubleheader at La Rue Field.

Cruse gave up just two hits in her six-inning stint.

The Aggies had two runners on in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap, but the Gaels recorded the final out to win, 2-1, and send UCD to 19-32 overall.

With Cruse, well, cruising, the Aggies scored all of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of Game 1. Four consecutive two-out hits — a single by Christina Guidry, doubles by Brianna Warner and Amy Nunez, and a single by Kelly Zboralske — accounted for three UCD runs.

Cruse fanned four and, other than an infield single in the first, made just one mistake — letting up a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Aggie reliever Leah Mundan pitched the seventh to earn the save.

The Gaels struck first in Game 2, scoring twice in the third inning, before Cat Guidry walked and scored on Christa Castello’s single in the fifth.

UCD will host Hawaii in the season’s final series, which begins Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
