The Davis Rugby Club wrapped up the summer Rugby 7’s series Sunday in Dixon.
The varsity team finished third with a 2-1-1 record. Davis capped off the day with a 20-5 victory over Elk Grove in the Boys Varsity Silver third-place game. Davis was led by scoring tries from Marvin Grant, Michal Goodison, Jake Teafatiller and Ben Gore, who recorded his first try of the summer 7’s tournaments as the whistle was blown to end the game.
Throughout the tournament, the varsity also received outstanding play from Evan Sierras, runs and tackles from Anthony Pedroia, defense from Yared Haile and runs by Matt Meyers.
The junior varsity started the tournament off well with a 26-24 victory over Mother Lode, but ran into some tough teams the rest of the way and finished 1-3 for the tournament.
On the day, the JV were led by Eben Kohn with two tries, and Reese Peterson and Ian Donald with one try each. The JV team benefited from the excellent play of Jesse Keenan, Aavineet Johal, Chase Jones and Connor Layman.
Five Davis golfers participated in the weeklong Veritas World Junior golf tournament at Tustin Ranch and Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena.
Keaton Mohar, Preston Walchli and Patrick Cajandig competed at Tustin Ranch and placed in the top 15 in their respective divisions. Mohar was second in the 18-year-old division, Walchli — who had eight birdies — was 13th among 17-year-olds and Cajandig was 15th in the 16-year-old division.
Griffin Long and Jackson Masiel both competed in the 13-year-old division at Brookside. Long was eighth after carding two eagles and 10 birdies; Masiel was 15th and had four birdies.
On Thursday at Woodcreek Golf Course in Roseville, Collin Yee carded another round of 79 for second place at the First Tee Junior Tour. He shot a 40 for the front nine and closed out with a 39. After a slow start, he made 10 consecutive pars or better, including birdies on holes No. 2 and 18.
