The renewal is on …
Woodland High School hosts Davis at 7 p.m. Friday in the first football meeting between the two schools since a 34-23 Blue Devil triumph back in 2007.
“I think it’s great for both communities and I fully expect the athletes to embrace the game in a spirit of competition,” third-year DHS head coach Steve Smyte told The Enterprise. “It’s good to have rivalries and games that those kids involved can remember for years.”
The Wolves (0-4) and Devils (2-2) first began playing in 1929 — with the schools splitting the last 10 matchups.
“There have been a lot of great players … in this game and great coaches who have coached in this game,” Smyte added. “I just hope the idiots out there who are only looking for a reason to be a jerk and take this opportunity to do something stupid (will) stay home, or go to a European soccer match instead.”
Both schools are nursing injuries to key players and neither Bert Salinas of Woodland nor Smyte was willing to talk about who those players are — and whether they’ll be ready to play Friday.
“Every team has guys that are hurt or sore by now,” Smyte explained. “We have a motto — ‘Next guy in.’ I fully expect that the guys who can play will be ready to play.”
Davis has an opportunity to win its third game of the season for the first time since 2007.
