A year ago, the Davis High football team needed a win over heavily favored Elk Grove in the final game of the season to have a chance at the playoffs.

Friday night, it’s déjà vu for the Blue Devils (5-4, 1-3 Delta Valley Conference) as they travel to face the Thundering Herd (8-1, 3-1) at 7:15 p.m.

In 2012, the two teams entered the matchup with identical records, and DHS played one of its best games of the season before falling 17-10 to the eventual Sac-Joaquin Section Division II runners-up.

The key for the Devils will be to slow down EHGS’ running attack, which is paced by senior Wadus Parker (1,357 yards, 18 touchdowns).

With front-seven defenders like Bailey Murray, Marvin Grant,  Zac Slavich, Brendan MacDonald and Eli Castro, among others, leading the way, the Davis defense — which shut out three of four opposing offenses during one early-season stretch — could be up to the task.
