Two days after graduating from Davis High on June 7, Nick Denton — representing the Blue Devils in the Golden West Invitational at Cal — captured the shot put in school-record fashion with a heave of 58-8.75.
Denton, who is headed for UC Santa Barbara, erased a 50-year-old DHS mark of 58-3.5 — set by Earl Maxie in 1963.
Denton outdistanced Marty Taylor, an unattached competitor, who threw the shot 58-2. It was the 54th annual Golden West Invitational.
The national and GWI record is 81-03.5, set by Michael Carter of Dallas, Texas.
Denton — also a standout Devil football player — earned the title of Sac-Joaquin Section Masters champion with a throw of 56-9.5 last month.
