STOCKTON — With balls flying in all different directions thanks to the wind at The Reserve in Stockton, the Davis High boys golf team accomplished two things in Tuesday’s third Delta League tournament of the season.
While posting a not-to-shabby finish of second place — behind Jesuit which is now tied with the Blue Devils in the conference standings — DHS also gained valuable experience should it face similar conditions again.
“We played well but not as well as we would have liked to have played,” said Devil coach Karl Ronning. “The wind presented a little bit of a problem and dealing with that adversity is one of the things we need to learn about. We got that lesson (Tuesday).
“It’s going to make us a better team. If we play in those conditions again, we will do a lot better.”
And it’s not as if Davis did poorly on Tuesday — far from it. All five scoring locals finished in the top 13 as the Blue Devils carded a 410, just behind Jesuit’s 400.
Junior Andrew Arnheiter paced DHS with his second-place 79, while senior Jackson Kavrell and freshman Jackson Masiel were tied for sixth at 82. Senior Patrick Cajandig’s 83 put him in a tie for 10th, while junior Sam Yamauchi finished the course in 84 strokes to take 13th place.
With a couple of weeks left in the regular season — including a dual meet against Grant on Wednesday at Haggin Oaks — Ronning says the Delta League championship will come down to the final conference tournament, set for April 29 at Wildhawk.
