Devil runners do just enough at subsections
When a team is one of the favorites to win a championship, the preliminary rounds become a delicate dance. While moving on is the goal, staying healthy and conserving energy are equally important.
That was the case on Saturday with the Davis High boys and girls cross country squads as they competed in the Sac-Joaquin Subsections at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp.
With the top 10 teams in each division qualifying for next week’s section championships — set for Saturday at Willow Hill in Folsom — the Blue Devils took care of business while showing off their bunching abilities.
“The mission was to qualify while expending minimum energy and staying healthy and injury-free,” said DHS coach Bill Gregg.
The Davis girls finished fourth in team scoring with just 27 seconds separating the first and seventh-place runners. The qualifying Devils were Fiona O’Keeffe, Maggie McManis, Laura Daggett, Sophie Meads, Laney Teaford, Danielle Gantar and Giulia McIsaac.
The locals boys ran even tighter, with all six runners finishing in a virtual tie at 18:06 to put their team in ninth. The DHS sextet included Jack Scranton, Gavin Monges, Sugal Sutter, Jasper Laca, Daniel Rowen and Paul Mohr.
