SACRAMENTO — When Danielle Styers hit the first pitch of the game for a single on Tuesday, Davis High had its blueprint for a 10-3 Delta Valley Conference softball victory at Grant.

Many of the Blue Devils (6-11, 1-1) used the strategy and it worked to perfection as DHS got 17 hits — by 11 different players — to pound the Pacers, who aren’t the slouches they used to be, according to Devil coach Art Guerra.

“It was one of those games; 17 hits is just awesome,” Guerra said. “You want these kids to have fun out there and that’s what happened (Tuesday). These are the days you play for.”

Styers came home on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Ashley Dufresne to score Davis’ first run, and went on to finish the day with three more hits, a including a double, and two RBIs.

“She just continues to be hot and she’s playing great in center field, too,” Guerra said of Styers, a senior. “She had multi-hit games in four of the last five, which is huge for us in the leadoff spot. After missing last year … I couldn’t be happier for her.”

Grant actually tied things up in the bottom of the second inning, but the Blue Devils broke it open in the third …

Emily Ginn led off the frame with one of her two hits, and Madi Yule followed with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Maddie Asta put two runners in scoring position for Rachel Mobley, who singled one home.

Faith Harlan’s two-run single came next and Styers knocked in two more to put Davis up 6-1.

The Devils were ahead 10-1 before the Pacers scratched two across in the bottom of the sixth.

For DHS, Yule went 3-for-3 and Harlan was 2-for-3 with the two RBIs. Harlan, a sophomore, got both of her hits on the first pitch.

The Blue Devils play their third DVC game in as many days — Monday was a 3-2 loss at Laguna Creek — when they host Monterey Trail on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.

“We’ve been riding that roller coaster up and down,” Guerra said. “Its one of those things where you hope (Tuesday’s offensive outburst) carries over to (Wednesday).”
