Devils open DVC volleyball slate with a win

With a young and inexperienced group, Davis High boys volleyball coach Julie Crawford has spent the nonleague schedule getting her team ready for Delta Valley Conference play.

The work paid off on Thursday as the Blue Devils traveled to Franklin and won their DVC opener in four games.

After splitting the first two games — 25-23, 16-25 — DHS turned it on to capture the next two, 25-16, 25-13.

“(We) kind of let up a little bit in that second game and we aren’t the type of team that can do that, we have to fight for every point,” Crawford said. “It’s a learning process and I was proud because the next time we got down — 7-2 in the fourth game — we responded.”

The Devils served well all match long and used their fast, powerful offense to outlast the scrappy Wildcats.

Dan Bonetti provided a lot of the local power, while Mike Basso shined in his first extended action at libero.

Crawford also mentioned the improving play of Dominic Fannjiang as a key for Davis, which has a week off before hosting Grant next Thursday at 5 p.m. The Pacers are expected to compete with the Blue Devils for the DVC championship.
