The last time the Davis High boys and girls cross country teams ran the Willow Hills course, in the Nov. 2 Delta Valley Conference Championships, both squads won their races handily.
Hoping for the same result, the Blue Devils return to the Folsom course on Saturday to compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships.
The DHS boys will be defending their 2012 title and looking for their 10th crown in 14 section meets.
It’s a group that coach Bill Gregg says “is strong top to bottom.”
Last week, the Devil boys took first place at the SJS Subsections, even with talented junior Brian Song out of action. On Saturday, Song and Jaspar Laca may look to challenge Sheldon’s Abdul Hamid for the individual title.
“If one of them is feeling good, they might go for it,” Gregg said. “Otherwise, if they can finish 2-3 that would be great too.”
The veteran coach wants the rest of the Davis harriers — Ben Roberts, Charlie Harris, Gavin Monges, Blake Croft and Nick Borowsky — to run in a pack, a strategy that worked well at subsections.
The Blue Devils and Sheldon are regarded as the top two teams in Saturday’s Division I race.
On the girls side, DHS sophomore Fiona O’Keeffe will try to defend her 2012 individual title and help the Devils get past St. Francis. Last season, the Troubadours took first with the locals close behind in seventh.
