ELK GROVE — They’re 3-2 so far, scoring points by the handful.

Davis High has clocked some mediocre football programs and lost two games — one of which it probably should have won.

But the improvement is palpable and when their Delta Valley Conference season kicks off Friday night at Macres Stadium at Monterey Trail, the Blue Devils are going to find out if they are ready for prime time.

Led by quarterback Grant Dickerson (979 yards and 11 TDs), DHS tries to beat the Mustangs for the first time. The Trail is 2-0 against the Devils all-time, and comes in with a 4-1 record.

A ground-oriented team, the Mustangs have rushed for almost 1,500 yards in winning four straight.

But Davis, coming off of a bye week, has averaged 36 ppg and can strike from anywhere on the field. With junior back Winfred Roberson halfway to a 1,000-yard season and the Blue Devils showing depth for the first time in four seasons, the locals feel like they can play with anyone.

Elsewhere in the DVC, Grant (2-3)  hosts Franklin (5-0) and Laguna Creek (2-3) is at Elk Grove (5-0).

All games start at 7:15 p.m.
