ELK GROVE — It wasn’t a surprise to Davis High football players that charting a course through the rugged Delta Valley Conference wouldn’t be easy. They just didn’t expect this world to be flat.
With two games remaining in their season, the Blue Devils find little solace Friday night when they journey forth to meet Elk Grove, a cat-quick team that has fashioned an 8-0 record (3-0 in league) and continues to thrash opponents on the ground.
While the Thundering Herd has rushed for more than 2,400 yards thanks to running backs Robert Frazier (1,117) and Deon Ransom (870), it has completed only 17 passes for less than 300 yards. EGHS has no touchdown passes.
Meanwhile, DHS (2-5, 0-3 in DVC), is fighting an injury plague and hopes its remaining corps of 25 healthy players can pull off the mighty upset.
The Devils were held to only 56 yards last week by Grant, so fans could see an all-out aerial assault on Friday with quarterbacks Shayne Reagan (1,301 yards passing and 13 TDs) at the epicenter.
Davis tailback Winfred Roberson, held to 42 yards rushing in the 58-0 loss to the Pacers, is 150 yards short of 1,000 for his sophomore season.
Game time is 7:15 p.m. at Elk Grove/Laguna Creek Stadium on the EGHS campus.
