The Davis High girls golf team played a tough preseason schedule with the goal of getting itself ready to excel when league play began.
Mission accomplished.
At Wednesday’s Delta Valley Conference opener, the Blue Devils were light-years ahead of the competition. DHS shot a 401 to finish a whopping 60 strokes ahead of Franklin (461), which hosted the tournament at the par-71 Bartley Cavanaugh course. Laguna Creek (514), Elk Grove (613) and Grant, which had no team score, rounded out the event.
Though Franklin’s Kylie Fong took the top spot in the individual standings, Devils filled the next five spots in what coach Rhonda Mohr called “an impressive start to league play.”
Emily Masiel fought through an illness to pace Davis with a 75 that was good for second place overall.
“Emily was under the weather but remembered how (teammate) Kaity Honeychurch powered through a temperature and the flu (last year) as inspiration,” Mohr explained.
On Wednesday, Honeychurch and Yuexin Xiang tied for third by shooting 80s and Hayley Mitchell was just behind with an 81, her best score ever in a DVC tournament. Blue Devil Casey Harris rounded out the top six by carding a career-best 85.
Next Wednesday, DHS heads to The Reserve in Stockton for the second DVC tournament of 2013.
