Devils lose to NU in volleyball

By
September 15, 2010 |

With early season games against tough opponents, Davis High girls volleyball coach Leigh Whitmire isnÕt expecting to see her team win every match. But the veteran coach would like to see a bit more competitiveness and consistency from her squad.

Whitmire saw some spurts of good play in TuesdayÕs 25-11, 25-17, 25-16 loss to area powerhouse Nevada Union, but the Blue Devils also made too many mistakes.

ÒThey are just a really good team,Ó Whitmire said of a Miner squad that also took home first place at DHSÕ Varsity Fall Classic tournament on Saturday. ÒBut we did a lot of good things, we had some long rallies and we played some good defense.Ó

The Davis coach praised the play of Angelina Leigh, Angie Rinaldi and Jordan Kelley and also said Anna Pan came off the bench to provide some good moments. Now, she wants to see more moments like that from the rest of her team.

ÒTeams like Nevada Union, Edison, Woodland and Rocklin are good teams that give us a lot of good competition, which helps us make improvements,Ó Whitmire said. ÒI sees of possibilities for this team, but I would like to see (the players) step up a little bit and compete for positions.

ÒWe have a lot of pieces to the puzzle, but we need all of them to be more consistent.Ó

The Blue Devils welcome in the Wolves on Thursday for a rivalry match at 6 p.m.
