The minute the final whistle blew on Thursday’s regular-season finale, a 3-0 victory at Elk Grove, the Davis High boys soccer team and its coach Alex Park set their sights on the Sac-Joaquin Section tournament, which begins Tuesday.
The Blue Devils (15-4-3) had already clinched the 2013 Delta Valley Conference championship, but Thursday’s victory also means DHS (9-0-1 DVC) has not lost a league game in Park’s two years as head coach. Last season’s 7-0-3 squad tied with Grant for the conference crown.
On Thursday, the Devil defense posted its ninth shutout in 10 DVC contests — a 3-3 tie with the second-place Pacers on a super-windy day is the only blemish — as the usual suspects stepped up and Kyle Fix filled in admirably for injured teammates for the second straight game.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, junior Joe Rainer scored twice and classmate Pablo Guarnizo tapped in the other goal after the Thundering Herd keeper made a save on a shot by Ricky Gonzalez.
Rainer started the scoring when he headed in a cross from junior Raunak Manandhar as the two hooked up on that exact play for the second time this week. Rainer had the final goal of the contest, knocking in a long-range shot after the Elk Grove keeper shanked a clear attempt.
