DHS boys go to work in winning at Ponderosa’s pool

SHINGLE SPRINGS — Knowing they had their Delta Valley Conference water polo game in hand early against Ponderosa, the Davis High boys kept their foot on the gas pedal most of the way through a 16-3 road victory on Tuesday.

But after opening up a 10-0 halftime lead, the Blue Devils weren’t trying to run up the score. DHS’ goal was just to keep getting better.

“We had some things we wanted to work on and the only way to work on them is to go full speed, full bore,” said longtime Devil coach Tracy Stapleton. “We are working on our spacing in the halfcourt and in our transition from defense to offense — just having a better awareness offensively.”

In the victory, senior Garrett Fisk led Davis with five goals, freshman Nick Masson had a hat trick and junior Conrad McCarthy and Alex Borowsky, a 12th-grader, added two goals apiece. Single tallies came courtesy of seniors Sam Burke and Graham Fullerton,  junior Gabriel Leal and freshman Cameron Wright.

Junior goalie Jeff Stark — who Stapleton said just keeps improving — had four saves for the locals while splitting time with sophomore Jensen Geist (two saves).

The Blue Devils are back at Arroyo Pool next week for a Tuesday match against Lodi (3:45 p.m.).

“Lodi will be a good game; they are probably one of the top 4 teams in the section,” Stapleton said.
